The University of Utah Health’s TRAILS (Technology, Recreation, Access, Independence, Lifestyle, Sports) program, in conjunction with the groundbreaking TetraSki Express, represents a beacon of hope and empowerment for individuals with complex physical injury or illness. Established under the pioneering vision of the Craig H. Neilsen Rehabilitation Hospital, TRAILS and the TetraSki Express are not just programs — they are lifelines that redefine the boundaries of possibility through adaptive sports, recreation, wellness and education.
TRAILS, since its inception in 2001, has not only revolutionized adaptive sports but has also emerged as a hub of medical and technological innovation. We transcend traditional boundaries by offering a diverse range of activities - from skiing to cycling, kayaking to tennis - all designed to ensure that physical challenges are never a barrier to the exhilaration of sports.
Our crowning achievement, the TetraSki, stands as the world’s only independent alpine ski for athletes with complex physical injury or illness. A product of our unique integration within the University of Utah’s extensive research network, the TetraSki is a symbol of freedom and peak performance, born from the collaborative efforts of our Department of Engineering and the wider health system. TRAILS is not just about adaptive sports; it's about leading the charge in creating adaptive solutions that restore independence and redefine what's possible in recreation and sport.
